What is Baccarat all about?

There are three popular variants to Baccarat, namely:

  • Punto Banco (American version)
  • Baccarat Chemin de fer (French)
  • Baccarat Banque (French)

Punto Banco is strictly a game of chance and has no skill or strategy involved. Player’s moves are dependent on the cards they are dealt. In Baccarat Chemin de fer and Baccarat Banque, players can make choices which allows skill and strategy to play a part.

The Baccarat rules

You and the dealer are each dealt a hand. In order to win, you must pick the hand with a score closest to 9 (not above 9). Whoever has the highest value closest to 9 wins the round.

The cards 2-9 are valued at the number they represent, and are added together to create a total value. For example, if you are dealt a 2 and a 9, your value is 11. Aces are valued at 1, Kings and Queens have no point value, and Jacks are not used in the game at all. If a player’s total is between 0 and 5 on the first draw, they must draw a third card. If the player draws a total between 6 and 7, he stands (keeps that hand).

The table game of Royals and Spies

Baccarat gained attention in 1891 during the Royal Baccarat Scandal, also known as the Tranby Croft affair. This was a British gambling scandal involving the Prince of Wales (future King Edward VII), and started during a house party in September of 1890, when Sir William Gordon-Cumming was accused of cheating at baccarat.

A few decades later, baccarat made another appearance in the popular spy series James Bond. Being Bond’s favourite casino game, baccarat gained major attention in the 1953 debut of Casino Royale, where Bond faces Le Chiffre in a thrilling battle of baccarat.
