Steve Jobs Day?
Today is not Steve Jobs Day… It’s Steve Jobs Month. It’s the month in which one of the most influential men of all-time left this world. Six years ago on October 5th Jobs succumbed to pancreatic cancer. Over his 56 year lifespan, the inveterate loner, electronics guru and Zen Buddhist designed and developed an awesome array of Apple development platforms and devices… as well as a few flops.
To celebrate the extraordinary life of the visionary who gave us the iPod, iPad, iPhone and the App Store, we’ve hunted down a few facts that’ll blow your mind:
The Early Years

Conceived in Syria and born in San Francisco, Jobs was the illegitimate son of a Syrian Muslim father and American Catholic mother. Due to family pressure, the birth mother unilaterally decided to give the baby boy up for adoption. Jobs’ adoptive parents were blue-collar workers with no college education. The early relationship between mother and son was so fraught with difficulty; she considered returning the infant on more than one occasion. Despite the ‘false start’ Jobs had a loving and supportive family life.
The Boy Genius

By age 10 Steve was already hooked on electronics. His fascination with machines, gizmos and gadgets was all-encompassing, so much so, he was a bit of a terror at school. His propensity for playing pranks on his fellow classmates was largely due to boredom. The only time he put his back into his studies was when his teacher started bribing him with money to complete his assignments!
By 13 Jobs was a precocious teenager who spent most of his time working on his own electronics projects. It was during one of his inventive streaks that he called Bob Hewlett – the top gun at Hewlett-Packard – and asked him for spare parts. Hewlett was so impressed by the youngster he offered him a summer job assembling frequency meters!
A Love of Literature and LSD

In the seventies, the youthful Jobs discovered poetry and literature for the first time. He immersed himself in the works of the great American writers – Ernest Hemingway, Jack Kerouac, John Steinbeck and Harper Lee – and took a headlong plunge into Shakespeare.
He entered college, not to study computer science or electrical engineering but to take creative writing classes. As a child of a working-class family, Jobs had to fend for himself. He even returned Coca-cola bottles for cash for food.

Interestingly enough, the young man who would become one of the richest self-made millionaires in America dropped out of college. He went on a prolonged gap year to India where he became interested in Zen Buddhism, a practice he continued under Zen Master Kobun Chino Otogawa on his return to the USA.
It was during his time at a commune in Oregon that Jobs experimented with LSD… and loved it. In fact, he later claimed tripping on LSD was the third most important thing he had done in his life! The nerd had evolved into a hippy who was more into psychedelic drugs and meditation than anything else!
Apple Explosion

In 1975 Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak founded Apple in Jobs’ garage. It was during the early years that he developed his trademark look; blue Levi jeans, a black long-sleeved turtleneck shirt and New Balance sneakers, a uniform he wore for the rest of his working life.

Steve Jobs was as contrary in death as he was in life. He chose not to treat his cancer with radiation or chemotherapy, a decision one doctor said was as good as committing suicide!
