Though the origin of the phrase ‘there’s no such thing as bad publicity’ is disputed, there is little doubt America’s President Trump considers it to be an unquestionable truth. There can be few alternative explanations for the boorish language he often seems to adopt as his default mode of speech. Trump seems to be at his most insulting when sending a stream of messages direct from his own Twitter account. And even if history judges his behaviour to be more complex than it seems, one element at play is undoubtedly what the French term ‘succès de scandale’ (literally, “success from scandal”).
