For some time now, Uber’s approach to the marketplaces in which it operates has been straightforward. By using its innovative app, you can order food, a taxi, a ride in a private car shared with other passengers and even secure the use of bicycles. Since Uber first got going a decade ago, we have got used to the ability to order all manner of things from our smart devices, from accessing an online casino in our hands to ordering goods to be delivered to your front door with just a tap or two. As such, it is sometimes easy to forget just how innovative Uber – and the world of e-commerce more generally – has been.
Mass shootings are almost an everyday part of life nowadays. They occur all over the world, from New Zealand to India and from Kenya to Brazil. Of course, understanding when a mass shooting is likely to take place is the challenge of law enforcers all over the world. Controlling access to firearms and using intelligence-based policing to get to know when terrorist incidents are planned are the two main planks of any policy designed to combat the phenomenon. However, so-called lone-wolf mass shootings, which are not coordinated in any way, are just about the toughest thing for any of the world’s police forces to deal with, usually because so little is known about such individuals before they strike. This was certainly the case when a lone shooter began opening fire on the public in the gambling paradise of Las Vegas in 2017, for example, when people were out and about enjoying a country music concert. Although the police did respond, the lone shooter managed to cause 851 injuries and no fewer than 58 deaths before he was killed.
If you like to try your hand at online games, then there can be little doubt that Gamescom, which is entirely devoted to gaming entertainment, is for you. It is well established as the largest video game trade show in the world, a title it has held for some time. Whether you measure it by the size of the exhibition space or the number of visitors who come each year, Gamescom is the main event when it comes to the video game industry. Nearly every major game developer and publishing house will be in attendance in 2019. There is simply so much to gain by launching new games at the exhibition. Although there are some very big video game trade fairs in North America and Asia, the European show remains one of the most anticipated by both industry insiders and video game fans alike. Until 2008, the show was held in Leipzig, but 2019 will be the tenth anniversary since Gamescom moved to the larger exhibition facilities of Koelnmesse in Cologne. What does the 2019 edition of Gamescom have in store?
It is a tricky question to answer on the face of it. Whether or not women play Fortnite in any numbers will always be a little difficult to answer given the way the game works, allowing players to get involved with assumed identities or even playing on each other’s logins. However, most players of this hugely popular game are male, as the game’s developers could easily demonstrate with their officially recorded data. In fact, as one recent news report pointed out, when the leading Fortnite players from across the globe came together at Flushing Meadows in New York to take part in the game’s inaugural World Cup Finals for a prize purse worth $30m (£24m), none of the participants involved were female. Given that female players have long been involved in gambling games and other competitive pursuits in which men and women can compete on level terms, it may come as a surprise that so few females seem interested in Fortnite. What on earth is going on?
We’re all going on a tropical island holiday! Well, at least that’s what I want to do. In fact, my bags are packed already. And yes, I have travelled before – to many cities and countries. But the one thing that has still eluded me after all these years, is a holiday on a tropical island. So, I’m off to do some research on the best tropical islands, and then I’ll decide where my travels will take me. Care to join? First things first, though, because it’s important to know what you need when you travel.
